For sometime there has been a report of a late 1st World War biplane crash near Torside Reservoir, this it would now seem did not happen, though an aircraft was wrecked here.  National Aircraft Factory No.2 at Heaton Chapel produced large numbers of DH-4s and DH-9s, some were flown out of the small airfield adjacent to the factory but others were transported by rail to Sheffield where they were then flown.  One of these aircraft (most likely a DH-9) fell from a train near to Torside at some point late in the WW1 and was destroyed.  It would seem as though this is the reported crash.
