Miles Master Mk.III W8560 of No.5 (Pilot) Advanced Flying Unit forced landed near Bollington on the 17th October 1942

Crew / Passengers Rank - if applicable Position e.g. Pilot Status
L. Hyland Sergeant Pilot Uninjured

The pilot was on a training flight with the purpose of practicing forced landing approaches, however while conducting this he became lost on bad weather and found himself having to actually carry out a forced landing. He landed successfully in a field but while he was taxi-ing the aircraft to the edge of the field the undercarriage sank into a patch of soft ground and tipped the aircraft onto its nose causing minor damage.

Sgt Hyland was reprimanded for "being lost in so short a distance" of his home airfield but was not blamed in anyway for the aircraft tipping onto its nose.
