Wellington Mk.IC Z8980 of 27 OTU, crashed on Rud Hill near Sheffield whilst on a night training flight from RAF Lichfield on the 17th July 1942.

Some members of the crew were to lose there lives in latter service.
Sergeant Thomas Frank Thompson (First Officer at time of death) was killed on the 17th August 1944 while with the Air Transport Auxiliary.
Sergeant Kennington John Hythe Harris was killed on the 4th January 1943 in Lancaster Mk.I W4274 UV-B of 460 Squadron when it was shot down by a night fighter near to Nijmegen in Holland whilst on the outward leg of a raid to Essen.
Sergeant Jacob Henry Roden was killed on the night of the 19th/20th September 1942 in Wellington Mk.III X3762 in service of 150 Sqn.
