Whitley Mk.V BD295 coded UO-N of 19 Operational Training Unit (OTU) crashed on Cawdor Moor to the Southwest of Nairn in the early hours of the 17th May 1943 while on a night cross country and bombing exercise.

Sergeant Hartwell died of his injuries on the 19th May 1943.

 

A reasonable number of twisted fragments remain at the crash site.  Most of the wreckage is concentrated in this collection though I did find a couple of pieces about 200 yards lower down the moor.
