Avro Lancaster Mk.III PB456 of 101 Squadron RAF, crashed on Conic Hill near the southern end of Loch Lomond on the 13th September 1944. The aircraft was on a training flight from Ludford Magna when it dived into the ground. Shortly before impact the tail broke off, but this landed close to the main crash site.

Above is the crash site of PB456, the site had recently been dug on by the Dumfries Aviation Museum which explains the few piles of earth around the crash site.
Since my visit they returned and successfully two very intact Merlin engines.
