Supermarine Spitfire F. Mk.22 PK617 of 608 Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force, crashed on the 13th February 1949 near the village of Commondale in the North Yorkshire Moors. The pilot was on a training flight from Thornaby when his aircraft dived into the ground while he was performing low level aerobatics.

Above is a Spitfire Mk.XVIII, outwardly similar to a Mk.22

A small amount (although for a Supermarine type a large amount) of wreckage is still at the site in a small crater.
