The two crew were on a training exercise from RAF Leeming near Northallerton when they flew into the western face of Great Whernside a short way below its summit in low cloud.
Not much remains where RL197 flew into Great Whernside, a solitary undercarriage part and small fragments.A photo of the undercarriage part at the crash site.Nearby is a pit which contains many parts from RL197, as many items carry the 98 prefix, most with L 98 showing the were associated with the engines. Most items are cowlings, apart from the large control bar for the flaps. One item at the bottom of the pit is stamped with 57, showing it is off Halifax DT578.
