The crew were on a navigational training exercise from RAF Kinloss when the aircraft was observed by the Royal Observer Corps at Dalwhinnie to be on fire and losing altitude rapidly. The crash site was later located to the northwest of Loch Pattack just over 7 miles from Dalwhinnie. While there was an investigation by the Accident Investigation Branch no conclusions were reached. It was apparent that the aircraft had dived into the ground and there had been a fire.

The main site consists mainly of moderate sized pieces of wreckage, most of which show signs of severe impact.

Looking downhill to the north from the crash site.

Near to the main site is this partly crushed oil cooler.
Above is a collection of steel parts from the aircraft.
