North American P-51D Mustang 44-64084 of the 366th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, crashed near Glossop on the 29th May 1945 while being ferried from Debden to Speke. On the same flight P-51D 44-72181 crashed on Castleshaw Moor on the northern edge of the Peak District

The aircraft flew into rising ground at high speed while the pilot was attempting to get below low cloud to ascertain his position. Witnesses saw the aircraft perform a sharp turn (possibly trying to avoid terrain ahead) before striking the ground, the crash caused a crater some 18ft in diameter.
