The pilot was on a training flight from RAF Burnaston near Derby when he became lost and force landed the aircraft near to Chapel-en-le-Frith. However the aircraft struck a tree at Marshgreen Farm, which is off Long Lane to the south west of the town, and crashed, injuring the pilot.

He was later promoted to the rank of Flying Officer and was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross on the 9th July 1943 while flying with No.295 Squadron. Two weeks later on the 21st July he was reported missing and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. At the time No.295 Squadron was using Halifax aircraft to ferry gliders to North Africa.
