Westland Lysander Mk.IIIA V9729 of No.6 AACU, crashed at Cronkstone near Buxton on the 30th May 1942
A. Ilnicki | Sergeant PAF | Pilot | Uninjured |
D. Wainwright | Leading Aircraftman | Wireless Operator | Uninjured |
The aircraft was being used to provide night anti-aircraft co-operation with ground units at Rhyl and had taken off from Sealand near Chester. While returning from the Rhyl area to Sealand the pilot became lost and eventually force landed the aircraft near Cronkstone when it ran out of fuel. The aircraft suffered some minor damage during the force landing though the two crew were uninjured.
Nothing is known to remain at the site where the forced landing occurred and a number of systematic searches made of the field have revealed nothing of none agricultural origin.
